Campaigns Aimed at Young People
Several abuse prevention programs have targeted children for outreach. This approach is based on the assumption that preventing elder abuse requires changing attitudes instilled during childhood. The programs attempt to strengthen children's appreciation of older people, sensitize them to what its like to be old, and enlist their help in reporting abuse.
- New Jersey Association of Area Agencies on Aging
As part of its Elder Abuse and Neglect Project, the New Jersey Association of Area Agencies on Aging developed two curricula for elementary and middle school children. “It's Hard to Imagine” is for children in grades three through five,” and “Closing the Gap” is for those in grades six though eight. The MTV-style videos profile active senior citizens, describe abuse, and include instructions for generating discussion about what children can do if they see abuse. They also address discrimination, stereotypes, and prejudice, social values. The curricula have been used by classroom teachers, church youth group leaders, scout and civic group leaders, school nurses and others. A limited number of copies are available for $95.00 ($125.00 for the set).
