Tips for culturally specific outreach
- Find out how abuse is viewed in the community you wish to reach. This may be done through informal discussions, community meetings or focus groups. Other questions to explore are community members' attitudes about what should be done about abuse, and what barriers prevent victims and their families from getting help.
- Check out literacy issues in the target population. For example, don't assume all immigrants can read in their native language.
- Work with trusted sources of information including civic organizations, popular media personalities, churches and ethnic media.
- Make sure that the service response generated by outreach is accessible and acceptable. Advocate for improvements when problems are identified.
