Drama and Theater

Drama, theater and other forms of artistic expression can be used to deliver your message in powerful, dramatic or entertaining ways. Examples include:
  • Taped Theatrical Performance
The Dance is a 25-minute video of a theatrical piece in which an older battered woman reminisces about love, laughter, and dancing. It was created by the Maricopa Elder Abuse Prevention Alliance (MEAPA) and is available for purchase .
  • In Their Own Words
The Hispanic Council on Aging produced a 15-minute video in which Hispanic seniors tell their own stories of how they came to the United States and their experiences, including abuse. The video has been distributed to churches and schools. The project was initiated and directed by seniors.
  • Improvisational Theater Troupe
The Sage Age Players of Peterborough Ontario, which uses improvisational theatre to highlight seniors' concerns, has performed vignettes on elder abuse and fraud at local events. Group members write their own scripts and present them at diverse venues.
  • Oral Tradition and Storytelling
WE ARE FAMILY , a committee of the San Francisco Consortium for Elder Abuse Prevention that was formed to reach out to the African-American community, has used traditional African-American traditions and art forms to increase awareness about abuse. The 1999 Lifting As We Climb Back To Our Roots conference, which focused on cultural variables in casework, communication, home equity loan fraud, and domestic violence, opened with a “libation” to honor group members' ancestors and included a program of spirituals and poetry. Another conference, which focused on predatory lending, featured an African American storyteller, who told a story focusing on the theme of “home.”

More Tips:

  • Go where people are: community centers, downtown shopping areas and neighborhood sites.
  • Always check out meeting halls, exhibition spaces or other facilities before staging an event. A poor site can kill an event.
