Letters to the Editor

Letters to the editor raise points and express opinions about issues in the news. They also serve as a forum for ideas and debate. Opinions expressed can differ from those of the publication. Letters can also call attention to the work of your organization.

Writing a letter to the editor

  • Always tie your letter to something current, preferably a story the publication has covered.
  • If you are responding to an editorial or article that has appeared, state it: “I am writing in reference to the article or column of March 6th 2003.”
  • Keep letters short and to the point. Three paragraphs is considered maximum. Longer letters are likely to be cut.

More Tips

  • Letters relating to published articles should be sent immediately after the article appears.
  • Don't hesitate to contact national publications. They have widely read letters sections.
