When to Contact the Media
Getting media coverage typically requires “pitching” ideas that have “news appeal.” This may include:
- The launch of a new program. Although new services are not typically news, programs that are “firsts” such as a community's first shelter for the elderly, may get a reporter's attention.
- Action by government on which you can comment
- Court rulings such as convictions in criminal abuse cases or large settlements in civil suits
- Reports or studies your organization or others release
- A person with a compelling story is willing to share his or her story with the media
- Visits by important officials to your project or facility
- Your attendance at major international meetings or training programs
